When I served in the military, I served in a highly effective infantry unity that embodied the warrior ethos. In fact, during our morning runs we would often sing cadences about standing our ground and fight for what we believe as a nation. I miss that kind of unit cohesion that is precisely effective because of its core philosophy. Imagine if you will, some 800 people together believing in a set of morals that defines what victory means in a hopeless war zone. Together they can achieve the seemingly impossible – turning a city that was mortared daily to a city where children felt safe to come out and play.
I never did quite understand what an “ethos” means. I suspect it is some sort of internal motivation to do the honorable and sensible thing, not because it is what is acceptable, but because it is what is right. To the military, that means standing to fight and challenge the elusive terrorism. But what does it really mean to the individual in the domestic front?
A few days ago, I wrote a blog about our industrialized food system. A reader left me a link to follow. Here is the breadcrumb: http://www.ethosthemovie.com
Here is where I place my faith in humanity – that there be enough of us who cares enough to form the beginning of a mighty universal roar. Live life as it should, under the sun, free from enclosures of industrialization. Live free and reach out to our neighbors to form a not so perfect union globally as specie intended to perpetuate life, not destroy it.
